But, I don’t want to miss an entire day or more of not being able to get out and about. Since we’ll be there for several days total, I can deal with hanging around the hotel for part of a day or evening to avoid the pandemonium. But will we be able to get anywhere on foot during this time, or will there be large crowds of people jamming the sidewalks, too, and does it tend to get rough? Should we just plan to stay in our hotel until things calm down? My spouse typically does not do well in large mass crowds, so if it’s mainly just cars blocking the streets but not people crowding the sidewalks and we’re on foot, he’ll likely be okay, but if it’s like a massive sea of people standing around making it difficult to walk anywhere, we’ll definitely want to stay in. What I’m wondering is, how long does the bad traffic in the Downtown area for this holiday typically last? Does it start the day before (Friday) and extend into Saturday (the actual holiday) and possibly into Sunday too, or is it mostly contained to either the daytime or the evening on Saturday? I’m thinking we probably won’t want to plan on doing anything that requires traveling by Uber/Lyft when this is going on, or anything time sensitive like dinner reservations. It is my understanding that the actual parades are not in the Downtown area, but that a large amount of cars tend to converge on Downtown streets celebrating and create a lot of gridlock, making it difficult or impossible to get thorough traffic. We didn’t realize there was a big celebration for the Mexican Independence Day on September 16th until I saw something mentioned about it when I was researching more into things to do while we are there, which falls right smack dab in the middle of our planned trip. We wanted to stay Downtown since a lot of the sights we are interested in seeing are in the Downtown area, and we are not planning on hassling with renting a car and driving - we plan to walk to where we can, and use Uber/Lyft or possibly public transportation where it might be a bit too far to walk. Currently, we are booked at the Hilton Chicago on Michigan Ave. Hello! My spouse and I are planning on visiting Chicago for the first time in September.
